Protecting corals at our drilling operations
Delivering good environmental performance is integral to our day-to-day activities. In 2012, Centrica discovered the presence of cold water coral assemblages during a pre-drilling site survey at the Cooper offshore oil well and we therefore took every effort to mitigate any potential adverse impacts our drilling could have within the coral vicinity.

Overview
Our business has a substantial environmental impact and carbon emissions contributing to climate change remain the most significant and material environmental impacts of our operations.
Our Group Environment Policy outlines our commitment to reduce these impacts and our robust environmental management systems help us measure progress against our targets. We aim to increase the proportion of our waste that is recycled, reduce waste to landfill, ensure hazardous waste is managed responsibly, and cut water consumption. We count on our employees to help us meet these targets by changing their behaviour - using less water and energy, and recycling more waste - and encouraging others to do the same through awareness raising and environmental activities.
We measure our impact by monitoring waste, recycling, and water consumption from our offices and other operations, as well as water used for cooling and processing. We also have programmes in place to monitor our impacts on biodiversity, and we report data on emissions of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and ozone-depleting substances in accordance with best practice.
