We are the biggest energy supplier in Britain's domestic market. Operating under our British Gas brand (Scottish Gas in Scotland), we had 15.7m gas and electricity customer accounts at the end of 2009.
Overall the number of customer accounts in our residential energy business grew by 141,000 in 2009 and we closed the year with 15.7m accounts on supply. This growth followed our price reductions of 10% for the standard gas tariff in February 2009, 10% for the standard electricity tariff in May and 7% for the standard gas tariff in February 2010, making us the cheapest major domestic energy supplier for both gas and electricity in the UK.
We continue to lead the industry in helping our most vulnerable and in-need customers. We have nearly 500,000 customer accounts on our residential social discounted tariff and spent more than double our share of the overall Government target. We committed a further £10m between 2008-2011 to the British Gas Energy Trust, a charitable organisation for those needing assistance with energy bills. Our charity partnership, here to Help, has heped identify an additional £23.4m in benefits for older people to date.
