Business energy supply and services

We are Britain's leading supplier of energy and energy services to the public and private sector, from small and medium-sized enterprises through to large multi-site users.

In addition to offering a range of energy products from open tariffs to fixed price contracts, we also now offer a combined energy and services proposition for our customers called 'Energy 360'. Through our energy services business we are changing how our customers source, measure, manage, control and pay for their heat, power and light. We continue to be the industry leader in the supply of smart meters and Automatic Monitoring and Targeting (aM&T), which provides real time consumption data to help customers improve their energy efficiency.

British Gas's future growth in energy services was further strengthened in 2009 when we acquired Energy and Building Management Solutions Limited and Newnova Group Limited. British Gas has now made four acquisitions in the energy services and management sector, giving us a strong base to build on as this market expands over the coming years.

The number of business energy customer supply points ended the year slightly up at 1.047m, as we focused on value and retention following the step up in customer numbers at the end of 2008 following the E4B and BizzEnergy deals. Customer retention remains high in our small and medium enterprise (SME) business and we have been successful in growing the gross margins for both SME and large multi-site (Industrial & Commercial) customers. Our ability to deliver a more comprehensive service for complex accounts, where service is a key differentiator, has been central for our growing success in the multi-site customer segment.
